The series entitled "Mountain Men" was realized
in North-Eastern New Mexico in August of 1991.
Most subjects from this series live
in the mountains of the American Southwest.
They are fanatic about the period in
American history of approximately 1850.
They make their living as silversmiths, ironmongers, jewellery artisans,
bead traders, clothing makers and trappers.
They get together once each year for the purpose of
selling their wares in the Governor's Court of old Santa Fe.
That year's "Rendezvous" was preceeded by a three-dy and night horseback journey
over the mountains from Glorieta to Santa Fe.
These photographs were made in a field on the outskirts of Santa Fe
on the morning of the final few kilomeeters into the Town Centre.
This style of portraiture interest me a great deal.
I like to be able to closely examine people with strong personal style.
The Mountain Men make their own clothing, their clothing and personal style is their own.
We are conditioned to judge people by their outward appearance.
I am fascinated by the power of personal style as manifested in the choices people make
and how those choices affect the way in which they are judged and related to in daily life.
Underneath the clothing, makeup, beards and hairstyles we are all the same.
We would not know how to relate someone who was truly naked.
